‘Tōku reo tōku ohooho
Tōku reo tōku mapihi maurea’
My language is my awakening
My language is the window to my soul
Te Reo Māori is the unique indigenous language of Aotearoa NZ and at Whangarei Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all of our tamariki have the opportunity to hear, learn, and speak Te Reo Māori everyday. We want to begin the journey of our tamariki becoming bilingual or multilingual citizens.
All of our tamariki will attend weekly classes learning basic conversational reo which they can use in and around school, at home, amongst their whanau, and in their community. The dialect we use is specific to, and reflects, the nuances of Tai Tokerau.
Tamariki will be given further opportunities to use Te Reo Māori through the use of pōwhiri, whakatau and our morning tikanga of Timatanga. The reo will also be taught using waiata as this helps tamariki to retain kupu and knowledge, and it helps them to see and hear how words can be combined and used. More importantly though, it is a fun way to learn.
