English Literacy

At Whangarei Primary, literacy is focused on the use and enjoyment of language and literature communicated orally, visually or through reading and writing. It incorporates all the aspects of language - speaking, listening, reading and writing.

School wide, we use iDeaL structured literacy to systematically teach reading, writing and spelling. This approach focuses on phonemic awareness and alphabet knowledge to give children the skills to read, spell, and write confidently.

For writing, we use The Writer's Toolbox programme, which helps students develop and extend their writing skills. This hands on, interactive approach engages students and helps them master the writing process. The online tool (funded for all Year 5 & 6 students) provides instant feedback for both students and staff.
