‘E hara taku toa, i te toa takitahi
He toa takitini’
My strength and success is not because of me alone
It is because of our collective effort
Tamariki who are curious and passionate about waiata, kaupapa Māori and performance will have the opportunity to join one of our two kapa haka roopu; Te Waenga - The Middles (Yrs 3-4) or Ngā Tuakana - The Seniors (Yrs 5-6). Waiata taught will predominantly originate from Tai Tokerau along with some other well-known waiata from throughout Aotearoa.
Practices for these two roopu happen weekly with extra practices timetabled before big occasions. Tamariki will get many opportunities to perform at different school events and local kapa haka festivals which involve many of our local Whangarei schools. We also host our own kapa haka festival - He Kākano - in term 4.
We encourage our tamariki to stand, sing and perform with ihi, wehi and wana but also remember that they stand alongside their peers - representing their kura and their whanau.
