At Whangārei Primary School, we endeavour to run a balanced mathematics programme across all curriculum levels. We do this by making sure that time is given to rich routines*, specific teaching of skills / knowledge, open ended problem solving, unfamiliar tasks, and strand (measurement, geometry, statistics/probability).
We try to use real life tasks that are low floor - high ceiling. This allows more students to be involved in the same activity. Low floor means that it is easy to start or enter the task. High ceiling means that it is easy to extend students.
Mathematics is integrated throughout the day thus ensuring we are doing our daily hour of maths. For example: When we participate in science, we are using applied maths. Or when the Juniors do the calendar, count the days of school, or go on a shape hunt they are integrating maths. At Whangārei Primary School we pay for each student from year 2 - 6 to have their own Sumdog account. We encourage students to use Sumdog at home. If you would like your child's login information please contact their classroom teacher. *Rich Routines are four warm ups which allow students to apply their thinking / reasoning skills to a range of tasks. This includes moveNproves, discussNdefend, recallNreason, and revisitNretain.
